ASIAN AMERICANS


According to the US Census, the Asian population and Pacific Islanders (API) have origins in East Asia, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Hawaii, Guam, Samoa and other Pacific Islands. The 2005 Michigan population estimate indicates 2.2% of residents are of Asian and Pacific Islander descent. Smoking rates are 21.6% among API men and 12.4% among API women. The communities with the highest smoking rates are:  Laotian 72%, Cambodian 71%, Tongan 65%, and Palauan 59% (APPEAL)
