ARAB / CHALDEAN AMERICANS

There are at least 350,000 Arab and Chaldean Americans in Southeast Michigan, the largest population outside of the Middle East. The majority have come from Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Egypt. According to data gathered by ACCESS, approximately 38.9% of Arab and Chaldean adults in Michigan smoke. In addition to cigarettes, smoking tobacco through a water pipe – also called Argileh, Narghile, Hookah, or Shisha is a practice more common among adults and youth in this community than in other communities.
